BSUIR designs device to monitor efficacy of PDT treatment

A group of scientists of the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics has developed a device to measure efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) used to treat cancer patients, BelTA learnt from Dean of the Computer-Aided Design Department of the university Sergei Dik.

Laser analyzer Speckle-scan is designed to monitor blood circulation in small vessels. According to Sergei Dik, it is not the first device of this kind, but it is better than similar products for a number of reasons. Speckle-scan monitors the efficiency of photodynamic therapy online, while the existing technologies require taking tissue samples and examining them under a microscope.

The Belarus-made device can be used in dentistry and dermatology, Sergei Dik noted.

At present Speckle-scan is undergoing tests on animals at the Institute of Physiology of the National Academy of Sciences. The university also teamed up with the National Research Center for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Experts say the device might be used for a variety of applications.

The university presented the laser analyzer Speckle-scan and some other solutions at the conference “Medical Electronics 2012: Medical Devices and New Solutions” that is taking place in Minsk on 13-14 December. Taking part in the forum are scientists from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, France and Germany. About 100 doctors from Belarusian regions will participate in the project.

The conference is organized by the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics. First Deputy Head of the university Anatoly Osipov informed that the conference is meant to discuss latest technologies in designing and using medical equipment, developing and assimilating new medical technologies and personnel training.
