Mikhail Khvostov is heading a delegation that comprises representatives of the Foreign Ministry, the National Intellectual Property Center, members of Belarus' offices in international organizations. The head of the Belarusian delegation spoke at the plenary meeting of the WIPO General Assembly on behalf of the regional group of Central Asia, Caucasus and Eastern Europe, praising the role of WIPO and its bodies in the development of the global intellectual property protection system. The Belarusian official stressed in his speech the need to intensify the activity of WIPO in the area of developing and strengthening the national potential of the WIPO member states. Mikhail Khvostov emphasized that this activity should be balanced and meet the needs of the country in economy in transition, should be aimed at bridging the gap in knowledge and technology, modernization of infrastructure, and providing access to specialized databases. The speech also supported the initiatives of the regional group, among which was an opening of the WIPO office in the Russian Federation and holding the diplomatic conference for the adoption of a design law treaty in Moscow in 2014. The Belarusian delegation emphasized the importance of cooperation with WIPO taking into account Belarus’ focus on innovation development. The participants of the meeting were informed on Belarus’ efforts to improve the national intellectual property system and the progress made in the implementation of bilateral agreements with WIPO.
